How I measure success at exhibiting textile art

In the last few years I have participated in a number of exhibitions. Exhibiting my very first time was my most successful in terms of sales. I sold out. A fluke ? I don't know ? As I think about my pieces for a exhibition in Leeds I wonder what defines exhibiting success . In 2012 I became aware that there would be an exhibition entitled "The dyeing of the Sun - a meditation on fire ".  I had never put a piece in an exhibition before. I thought about the exhibition brief and my mind started to think about super novas and the wonderful pictures you see of them. They  have crazy names like crab nebulae and pelican nebulae. These pictures are produced by assigning different wave lengths to the colours of the visible spectrum. How techy.  Just my thing.  I was hooked on this as a exhibiting subject. But how…

Eco dyeing here I come

I am delighted to be taking part next week in a workshop with  Fabienne Rey,  organised by  From the Earth Textiles at Art Van Go .  So this week I have been getting organised.    First I need lots of silk and wool fabrics .  I made a couple of felts myself , and had the good luck to come across a silk shirt in a charity shop.  It's also possible to eco dye mordanted cotton , and I have a number of different cotton fabrics mordanted with a variety of mordants , including alum and gall nuts. Then of course lots of  cotton , linen and wool threads . I have had to scrounge among my friends for sufficient tin cans but I did have a nice collection of rusty iron, collected on my wanderings in the Lake District . These are complimented by a small length of copper pipe which…

Exciting News

I learned early this week that my piece "After the ice " has been accepted into the From the Earth exhibition in June.  The exhibition is to celebrate natural and ethical textile practices and will take place in PA Arts Centre Datchworth, Herts. I am thrilled.  I even get invited to the private viewing !  Here is the piece that will be on display.   Other artists that I know are taking part at this moment are Jenny Leslie and Caroline Bell. This great news has made me revisit some of my other favorite naturally dyed felt pieces and I thought it was worth bringing them all together here.     Autumn Storm I love the subtle shade changes in these pieces I hope you do too.
